Zoom Program
2 - 4pm
No fee for this program

Eagles, Owls and the Maryland Breeding Bird Atlas 3
Sue Muller, a very knowledgeable  and enthusiastic local naturalist will present this program. She has always been interested in saving our planet and developed a life long passion for birds as a child. After earning a BS degree in Wild Life Management from West Virginia University, she dedicated her 40 year career to working in Natural Resources in the Maryland Piedmont. Currently she is the Howard County Coordinator for the Maryland/DC Breeding Bird Atlas 3 and a contributing editor for the Maryland Biodiversity Project.
Join this zoom presentation and learn about the Breeding Bird Atlas 3 project and about Sue’s work in mapping the distribution of eagle and owl nesting patterns in this geographical area. You can help too! This program will provide tips on how to find these nesting birds and how to contribute your observations to this valuable study.
Sue will talk about some simple ways to help make our gardens friendly for birds including promoting nesting habitat for hummingbirds and others. Invite your family to listen and learn!
There will be time for questions at the end of Sue's presentation.

The SSM Garden Club invites you to join us on April 10 to make Tussie Mussies, nosegays with a message. These talking bouquets were exchanged instead of written greetings during the Victorian era. Learn about the language of flowers during this time and enjoy your own Tussie Mussie. More information to come. Check back at the Sandy Spring Museum Calendar.

Holiday Greens Sale

Our wonderful group of happy elves picked greens, prepped, cut, bundled, arranged and decorated during our holiday greens workshops. Many thanks to our organizers, order callers, workshop leaders and project artists who made the whole process go seamlessly. Delicious soups, baked goods, fruit, cold plates and other goodies, along with the lively banter of great friends, made every day fun and fulfilling.

We began with cutting the greens at local homes in the area.
The greens were cut into manageable sizes and put into water to keep them fresh.

For the mixed greens wreaths, various greens were bundled and attached to wire frames using a special crimping machine.

Boxwood trees, wreaths and arrangements utilized Oasis forms cut and attached to a base. Boxwood
was individually cut and inserted into the foam.

After all the workshops and final sale, a clean up crew emptied and washed the containers to make them ready for next year.

The finished products were skillfully made and beautifully decorated.

We created, decorated  and sold:

🌟

19 Kissing Balls
24 Boxwood Trees
29 Boxwood Wreaths
5 Hydrangea Wreaths
12 Mixed Greens Sprays
34 Mixed Greens Wreaths
10 Hurricane Arrangements
17 Mixed Greens Arrangements

📗

Our best wishes to all our Garden Club members and friends for a healthy and Happy New Year.

Garden Club Trip

Several of our members and friends traveled together to see the Annmarie Garden and Art Center in Solomons, MD, where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay. The sculpture garden features a 1/4 mile walking path that meanders through the woods past permanent and loaned sculpture, including over thirty works on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art.

In September the Garden Club presented a wonderful program on Fall Decorating. There were demonstrations, a creative craft using recycled bottles and dried grasses, and fun food. It included outdoor decorating by Kathy G, Stephanie's topiary pumpkins, table and porch ideas with Amy and beautiful cost-cutting tablescapes by Sunny.

Planting Spring Bulbs
Bulbs are little packets of flower power that make us wait weeks, sometimes months, for results — but boy, are they worth it. The term “bulb” often refers not only to true bulbs, but also plants with tuberous roots, tubers, corms, and rhizomes; the information here can be applied to all of these. With a little basic knowledge, anyone can grow beautiful bulbs.
Spring bulbs:  Also called hardy bulbs, these bulbs are planted in fall, spend winter in the ground, and flower in spring. Some of the more common spring bulbs are tulipsirisesdaffodilshyacinthallium and crocus. These bulbs need several weeks of cold temperatures to break their dormancy and flower to their full potential.
Find out more about how to plant bulbs, companion plants and how to make a layered bulb garden in a pot at Garden Design.

Watch a YouTube tutorial on making a "lasagna" garden in a pot.
Add a piece of chicken wire above the bulbs to keep the squirrels out!
And while you're at it, dig out those cannas, elephant ears and dahlias to store for the winter.  You can also overwinter geraniums as done here.
