Fall into winter can sometimes look brown and drab. Our November speaker, Kathy Jentz, will discuss how to spruce up our autumn gardens with perennials, ornamental grasses and the fall colors of trees and shrubs. She will review plant materials that can give our fall and winter gardens a real "wow" factor.
We are so fortunate to have Kathy Jentz share her knowledge with us. Among her many accomplishments, she is editor and publisher of the award winning Washington Gardener Magazine, host of the podcast Garden DC and co-author of The Urban Garden: 101 Ways to Grow Food and Beauty in the City. She has presented programs at Monticello, the Philadelphia Flower Show, the US Botanical Gardens, Brookside Gardens and other prestigious places. In addition she has appeared on regular gardening guest spots on local TV and radio shows. Her mission is to turn black thumbs green! She believes in inspiration over perspiration.
Join us in November for this wonderful opportunity!

In September the Garden Club presented a wonderful program on Fall Decorating. There were demonstrations, a creative craft using recycled bottles and dried grasses, and fun food. It included outdoor decorating by Kathy G, Stephanie's topiary pumpkins, table and porch ideas with Amy and beautiful cost-cutting tablescapes by Sunny.
Planting Spring Bulbs
Bulbs are little packets of flower power that make us wait weeks, sometimes months, for results — but boy, are they worth it. The term “bulb” often refers not only to true bulbs, but also plants with tuberous roots, tubers, corms, and rhizomes; the information here can be applied to all of these. With a little basic knowledge, anyone can grow beautiful bulbs.
Spring bulbs: Also called hardy bulbs, these bulbs are planted in fall, spend winter in the ground, and flower in spring. Some of the more common spring bulbs are tulips, irises, daffodils, hyacinth, allium and crocus. These bulbs need several weeks of cold temperatures to break their dormancy and flower to their full potential.

Add a piece of chicken wire above the bulbs to keep the squirrels out!
And while you're at it, dig out those cannas, elephant ears and dahlias to store for the winter. You can also overwinter geraniums as done here.
