Tussie Mussies and the Language of Flowers

Don't know what a tussie mussie is? Tussie mussies were small bouquets popular during the Victorian era. Each flower, which was assigned its own meaning and message, allowed the

giver of a tussie mussie to send a subtle note of affection to a friend or lover. Educate yourself on the language of flowers and the history of this craft while creating your own tussie mussie (for yourself or for a loved one!) We are plannlng for an in-person program in April. Daffodils

Narcissus is a genus of predominately spring flowering perennial plants of the amaryllis family, Amaryllidacceae. Various common names including daffodils, jonquils and narcissus are used to describe all or some of the genus. Wikipedia

Depending on which botanist you talk to, there are between 40 and 200 different daffodil species, subspecies or varieties of species and over 32,000 registered cultivars (named hybrids) divided among the thirteen divisions of the official classification system. Daffodils multiply in two ways: asexual cloning (bulb division) where exact copies of the flower will result, and sexually (from seed) where new, different flowers will result.
Seeds develop in the seed pod (ovary), the swelling just behind the flower petals. Most often, after bloom the seed pod swells but it is empty of seed. Occasionally, wind or insects can pollinate the flower during bloom by bringing new pollen from another flower. When this happens, the seed pod will contain one or a few seeds.
Daffodil hybridizers pollinate flowers by brushing pollen from one flower onto the stigma of another. Then the resulting seed pod can contain up to 25 seeds. Each of these will produce an entirely new plant – but the wait for a bloom for a plant grown from seed is about 5 years!
After daffodils have flowered you can dead head the bloom so that energy goes into building the bulb for next year’s flower instead of seed production. Before removal of the leaves, they should be allowed to die back naturally until they are at least yellow.

Nesting Habits: From Eagles and Owls to Backyard Birds.

Can you spot an eagle's nest in the wild? Learn how to transform your own backyard into a birder's paradise.

Explore Maryland and the D.C. area through a bird’s eye view with expert and local naturalist Sue Muller! Discover tips and tricks on how to find eagles and owls in your area as Sue discusses her work on the Maryland/ D.C. Breeding Bird Atlas 3. Sue will also talk about the exciting project on mapping the distribution of local nesting patterns. Find out how you can participate in the mapping project and share your observations with scientists working to understand our changing ecosystems.

Sue will also be sharing some simple ways to help make our gardens the perfect nesting habitat for birds this season. Invite your family and friends to learn with you!

Sue Muller has a life long passion for birds and environmental conservation. After earning a degree from West Virginia University in Wildlife Management, Sue spent 35 years of her 40 year career in Natural Resources with the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks. Currently she is the Howard County Co-coordinator for the Maryland/DC Breeding Bird Atlas 3 and a contributing editor for the Maryland Biodiversity Project.

Tussie Mussies and the Language of Flowers

SSM Garden Club members invite you to join them to make Tussie Mussies, small bouquets of flowers that convey a message through the meaning of each flower. Learn about the history of Tussie Mussies and the language of flowers. Then enjoy creating your own Tussie Mussie!

We are planning for an in-person program in April, however if the covid situation dictates a change to a virtual program, details will be provided on our website.

In case we get to travel oversees this year, here are some wonderful Garden Shows taking place:

Keukenhof in Lisse, Holland March 24-May 15.

Keukenhof is a park where more than 7 million flower bulbs are planted every year. Gardens and four pavilions show a fantastic collection of tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, fritillaria, orchids, roses, carnations, irises, lilies and many other flowers.

Eagles, Owls and the Maryland Breeding Bird Atlas 3

Sue Muller, a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic local naturalist will present this program. She has always been interested in saving our planet and developed a life long passion for birds as a child. After earning a BS degree in Wild Life Management from West Virginia University, she dedicated her 40 year career to working in Natural Resources in the Maryland Piedmont. Currently she is the Howard County Coordinator for the Maryland/DC Breeding Bird Atlas 3 and a contributing editor for the Maryland Biodiversity Project.

Join this zoom presentation and learn about the Breeding Bird Atlas 3 project and about Sue’s work in mapping the distribution of eagle and owl nesting patterns in this geographical area. You can help too! This program will provide tips on how to find these nesting birds and how to contribute your observations to this valuable study.

Sue will talk about some simple ways to help make our gardens friendly for birds including promoting nesting habitat for hummingbirds and others. Invite your family to listen and learn!

There will be time for questions at the end of Sue's presentation.

Holiday Greens Sale

Our wonderful group of happy elves picked greens, prepped, cut, bundled, arranged and decorated during our holiday greens workshops. Many thanks to our organizers, order callers, workshop leaders and project artists who made the whole process go seamlessly. Delicious soups, baked goods, fruit, cold plates and other goodies, along with the lively banter of great friends, made every day fun and fulfilling.

We began with cutting the greens at local homes in the area.

The greens were cut into manageable sizes and put into water to keep them fresh.

For the mixed greens wreaths, various greens were bundled and attached to wire frames using a special crimping machine.

Boxwood trees, wreaths and arrangements utilized Oasis forms cut and attached to a base. Boxwood

was individually cut and inserted into the foam.

After all the workshops and final sale, a clean up crew emptied and washed the containers to make them ready for next year.

The finished products were skillfully made and beautifully decorated.

The Greens Sale Production has Begun....

The Garden Club has been busy cutting, prepping, soaking, grouping, cleaning and trimming loads of boxwood, magnolia, fir, pine, cedar, chamaecyparis, holly, spruce, cryptomeria, arborvitae and other greenery as we begin to make the most beautiful holiday wreaths, kissing balls, arrangements, trees and swags. And what fun to do it all together! The frenzy of constructing these works of art begins December 3rd.
