What's Wrong with My Plants?

The Garden Club can help you with that in more ways than one!  Join us in April as we get our minds and gardens ready for the busy outdoor season ahead.  We will begin with a deep dive into the world of plant diseases and pests and will make home remedies to cure and manage our plant problems.  Want to boost your garden's variety and have a back-up plan in case the pests win?  Join in our Garden Club Annual Plant and Seed wap by bringing one or more of your own selections to trade in.  To help others, please label pots and seed packets with the plant name and seed collection date/growing year.  Please assist our planning by sending an RSVP to us at gardenclub@sandyspringmuseum.org or call (301) 774-0022 ext. 145 and leave a message by April 3rd.


Trip to Ladew Gardens, Jarrettsville MD

Join the Garden Club as we visit the lovely Ladew Gardens and Manor House this Spring.  The 22 acres of formal Gardens and the stately Manor House were created at the Pleasant Valley Farm by Harvey S. Ladew (1887-1976).  They are a living legacy reflecting Ladew’s style, elegance and sense of humor. The extraordinary topiary gardens are known throughout the world and include more than 100 larger than-life topiary forms.   The luxurious country home contains many treasured antiques and the Oval Library has been noted by one author to be one of the One Hundred Most Beautiful Rooms in America.  You may visit   http://www.ladewgardens.com/ to learn more about the property

We will carpool and leave the Sandy Spring Museum at 8:30am and return between 3 &4 pm. Everyone pitches in for gas except the drivers. Fee for the tour of the house and gardens is $18.00 for adults & $15.00 for Senior 62 and over and we will pay individually at the Gardens.  We plan to have lunch at The New Manor Tavern in Monkton, MD on the way home. Courtyard Cleanup and Fairy Garden Workshop

Saturday April 23, 2016, 9 am till Noon, – Rain date April 30th


Beat those winter blues and join the Garden Club as we celebrate the return of the growing season by getting our hands dirty!  There is something for everyone at our Courtyard Gardening Day on April 23 from 9 am to Noon.  Bring your gloves, trowel, pruners, a hat and sunscreen and dig in as we clean, divide and plant.   Get ready to add something special to your own garden. Bring a bag to carry home cuttings from our garden cleanup. To help with planting, please RSVP to us at gardenclub@sandyspringmuseum.org or call (301) 774-0022 ext. 145 and leave a message. Students looking for SSL hours are welcome but must contact us by April 16th with their Name, Grade and area of interest. The rain date for this event is April 30th. Working in the soil is not for you? Then join us for the Fairy Garden workshop from 9 am to Noon on April 23rd as we get ready for the Strawberry Festival. No fairy's garden home is complete without mini furniture, glittery decor and floral inspiration.  Lend your crafting skills as we create tiny delights for our fairy garden builders.  Donations of champagne corks, beads, marbles, trinkets and small figurines are all welcome.  To help with planning, please RSVP to us at gardenclub@sandyspringmuseum.org or call (301) 774-0022 ext. 145 and leave a message. Strawberry Festival Plant Booth
Friday, June 3 and Saturday June 4, 2016

Volunteer sign up is now open, and we’re really looking forward to working together to make this year’s Garden Club Plant Booth a success. Even if you have never volunteered at the Plant Booth before, we’d love to have you! We can assure you it is a fun place to be the day of the Festival! We have opportunities on Friday, June 3 from 9 am – 2 pm for booth set up, and pricing of plants. You may come for an hour or two anytime during that time frame. There are also shifts at the booth on Saturday, June 4 from 8 am – 6 pm. These shifts run in two hour increments. The 8 am – 10 am shift is final booth set up, and the 4 o’clock shift is organizing and cleaning up leftovers. We usually finish by 6 o’clock. There will also be opportunities to help out at the 3rd Annual Fairy Garden Table. Gardeners of all ages will choose plants, a container and decorations to build a miniature landscape for the fairies and gnomes back home.


Christmas in July Workshop
Sunday July 24, 2016, 1pm-4pm

Have you ever wondered what goes on under the Kissing Ball? Come to our workshops and learn all about the under structure of the Kissing Ball, Boxwood Christmas Tree, Hurricane and Greens Centerpieces and Arrangements. You will learn all this and more as you help in the preparation for our fresh greens workshops on November 29th to December 4th. We will also start making the festive bows that adorn our beautiful arrangements and wreaths which we sell at the Sandy Spring Museum Holiday Green Sale. Sunday, February 14, 2016 Bats and Bees Program

What a lovely time we had at our Garden Club Program on Sunday. A warm-hearted thank you to Chelsea for presenting a wonderful program on Bats and Bees and teaching us to make the Beeswax Cotton Food Covers. 

The program began with a slide show on bats including the sounds they make. In our area the small brown bat or tr-colored bat is most prevalent.help They eat large quantities of mosquitoes and even stinkbugs! Bat boxes are a helpful roosting space and may be successful if they feel safe in it. Gardening for bats included a list of plants which bats enjoy. The cotton beeswax covers were made by sprinkling beeswax pellets mixed with a bit of jojoba oil onto a 8or 12 inch square of pinked cotton fabic, then pressing it with an iron between two pieces of parchment paper. These covers will mold to the top of a bowl or can be folded around a sandwich or chunk of cheese.

The garden club is planning a trip to go to Glenstone Modern Art Museum and lunch at Founding Fathers on February 26th. The car pool will leave the museum at 10am. Another trip on May 21 will be to the Ladew Topiary Garden.

Attendance 24, refreshments by Claire Bode, door prize, a pink heather plant was won by Amy Cohen. 

The Museum Garden Club is preparing for our annual Plant Booth at the Strawberry Festival in June. We would like to reach out to all our gardening friends in the community and ask you to join us.

It’s time to start the seedlings that will be sold at the Booth.  Starting seeds now can also be so uplifting as we wait for temperatures to rise!  We are asking you to grow any vegetable, herb, annual flower and native seedling or plant and share them with the Garden Club.    Along with seedlings, we accept donations of perennials, shrubs, or small trees. 

When weeding and dividing plants, pot up extras to sell, especially perennials.

 We also need containers, less than 12 inches in length, and decorations for the Fairy Gardens which will be made by children of all ages at our Craft Table. Decorations can be any small object or figurine.  Be creative as you look for these objects. A good example is that we need Champaign corks and their wires to use as table and chairs.

A to Z on Bats and Bees
We’re picnic planning in B-eautiful February, in a surprising way!

First, we’ll learn about garden-friendly BATS with an exploration of their habitat, life cycle and value in pest control…after all, each bat makes a picnic out of up to 1,000 mosquitos per hour! Then, we’ll move on to a project for our own picnic baskets this spring, courtesy of ever-helpful BEES. We will create personal sets of beeswax wrap, a beautiful, functional and reusable alternative to plastic wrap. The program will start at 2:00 pm in the Dr. Bird Room. Happy New Year 2016

We want to thank everyone that came out and helped with this year’s Greens Workshop and Sale. The wreaths, arrangements and swags were absolutely beautiful. We had another marvelous sale this year.

We appreciate the support of all our friends and members. We want to give a special thank you to Sunny Banvard our amazing Greens Sale Committee Chair for her dedication and hard work throughout the year. We also want to acknowledge Kathy Gaskill and Mary Dominique for their leadership in Greens Collection and Breakdown. Finally we want to mention Penny Sidell for all the hours she spent working behind the scene, Andrea Mohr for coordinating all the orders, and Dayna Tucker for the wonderful snacks.

Spooky Workshop

 

Thanks to all those that came out joined us at the Spooky Workshop last weekend. We had a lot of fun getting ready for the upcoming Greens Sale. Not only did we prepare wreath forms, arrangement bases and created many beautiful bows, we had a good time with our Garden Club Friends.

 

Special thanks to all those that help us organize the event. Our Committee Chairs Lynn Mahoney and Connie Wilson did a fabulous job getting everything ready. As always we enjoy absolutely delightful refreshments provided by our Refreshment Chair, Dayna Tucker.
